Subglacial topography and thickness of ice caps on the Argentine Islands

AbstractThis study presents the first subglacial topography and ice thickness models of the largest ice caps of the Argentine Islands, Wilhelm Archipelago, West Antarctica. During this study, ground-penetrating radar was used to map the thickness and inner structure of the ice caps. Digital surface models of all studied islands were created from aerial images obtained with a small-sized unmanned aerial vehicle and used for the construction of subglacial topography models. Ice caps of the Argentine Islands cover ~50% of the land surface of the islands on average. This chapter contains an outline of the geological history of the Rhenish Massif and the development of its margins and surrounding areas. Section 2.2 gives some main aspects of the development of the Variscan geosyncline and orogeny and a short description of the pre-Variscan geological history of this region. Since the end of the Variscan orogeny many different epeirogenetic processes have occurred here (Sect. 2.3). During these long geological times uplift and subsidence changed in the different parts of the Massif and in the surrounding areas.

The occurrence of shingling in. long range refraction records often makes the task of the seismic interpreter heavier, especially when several refractors are encountered and the velocity contrasts are small. The explanation of the phenomenon given by the existing literature is examined and the theoretical results are compared with the observed data on field records. In field seismograms shingling must be separated from the effect of geological structures or lateral discontinuities. If an appropriate analysis of shingling is possible, this phenomenon can be related to the type of refracting layer, being a useful tool to a qualitative approach. Particularities of Grey Alder (Alnus incana) Stands in Riparian Galleries Along Streams of the Southern Transylvanian Tableland (Romania)

Abstract Grey Alder (Alnus incana (L.) Moench.) stands are distributed in the Carpathian area on alluvial deposits with sediments of different grain size as galleries along rivers and streams of the sub-montane to the middle montane level. The geological structure (Tertiary sedimentary deposits) in relation to the hydromorphological processes is the base for the structure of the stream valleys, which are in part very deep. Under the special microclimate of these deeper stream stretches with lower temperatures there are favourable conditions for the development of grey alder stands.

Tomography Application to Complex Seismic Data of the Tjornes Fracture Zone (Iceland)

The Tjornes Fracture Zone (TFZ) is an active seismic zone in Northeast Iceland. It plays a key role to understand the geodynamic movement and location of tectonic plates. However the seismic experiment can not be performed close to earthquake sources, because sources are mainly located in the Greenland Sea. The unusual geological structure of TFZ and the limited conditions of an experiment lead to significant deviations between real observations and the values that are calculated in accordance with theoretical models. Cluster analysis of HVSR peak datasets to detect geological structures

A modified centroid-based algorithm has been applied to HVSR (Horizontal to Vertical Spectral Ratio) datasets (Nakamura, 2000) acquired for studies of seismic microzoning in various urban centers of Sicilian towns also aimed to obtain detailed reconstruction of the roof of the seismic bedrock (Di Stefano et al. 2014). HVSR data were previously properly processed to extract frequency and amplitude of peaks by a code based on clustering of HVSR curves determined in sliding time windows.
